Make a difference for a child as a buddy

Many children have fewer opportunities to participate in society for various reasons; due to a disability, poverty, loneliness or other reasons. Mooie Middag Maatjes is a buddy project for children and young people between the ages of 4 and 18 who are in a vulnerable situation. For them, it is nice to regularly receive all the attention and gain new experiences. Their world is expanded. In addition, the parents receive support and are relieved for a while. What it entails: • As a volunteer buddy, you come by once a week or once every two weeks to do fun things with the child • This can be at the child's home or you can do activities outside the home. For example, going to the museum together, playing a game, making music together, cycling or swimming together • As a buddy, you give exclusive attention to the child The project revolves around offering personal attention and undertaking fun activities that can make a big difference for the children. A volunteer says about this: "What is obvious to me can be very special to someone else. It gives me a good feeling to see that my buddy enjoys himself so much and can really be a child for a while." Would you like to do something for a child, but do you find it difficult to combine volunteer work with study or work? Then consider becoming a buddy together with your friend, girlfriend, housemate, sister, neighbor, aunt or whoever. A lot is possible! What we ask: • Patient • Friendliness • Good social and communication skills • Reliable • Enterprising • Available for at least six months; we ask this because it takes time to build a bond of trust with a child and almost all children need long-term buddy contact. What we offer: • Fun and useful volunteer work • You are part of an enthusiastic group of volunteers • Support and guidance by a (volunteer) coordinator • Training and volunteer meetings • Insurance against damage and accidents Calls: Oosterparkwijk. 9-year-old boy with autism and developmental delay. Mother would like to be relieved on Thursday afternoons when his brother goes to daycare. Someone who can teach him to ride a special (heavy) tricycle and/or go for a walk with him. Someone who is available for a long period of time, because of his difficulty with change. Sweet, cheerful boy who likes to be outside. Korrewegwijk, 7-year-old boy. Comes from a family of 9 children. He lives in a fantasy world, is a different fantasy figure every day. Communication is difficult, he speaks his own language and English. Fantasy world mainly takes place at home, outside he behaves more adapted. Then he also speaks Dutch, he was born in the Netherlands. We are looking for a patient volunteer who can connect with this creative boy. De Hoogte, 8-year-old boy. He has been in the Netherlands with his father for 2.5 years now. Nice boy, would like a buddy who will play with him and go outside with him. He likes football, Lego, kickboxing, swimming and playing. He is in a wheelchair and has a disability in his lower legs. At home he can move around by crawling and jumping. He speaks good Dutch, communication with his father has to be done with Google Translate. Haren, 5-year-old boy, he lives in a foster family. Help a status holder with your group of friends, so that he or she feels welcome in Groningen. You go out together, talk about Dutch culture, find a nice sports club, practice speaking Dutch, help with difficult letters, show the city and the surrounding area, think about future possibilities. You look at your own city with new eyes, and get to know another culture. Because you are with a group, you can take turns and divide the tasks. Humanitas ensures a good match and supports you with advice and action. After six months we discuss whether you want to continue or stop the contact.

Would you like to help a child enjoy language and reading more? Discover together how fun language can be! As a reading volunteer, you will read to a family in the municipality of Groningen once a week for an hour. You read to one or more children (of primary school age). You also talk about the story and play (language) games. In this way you increase the child's vocabulary and his/her knowledge of the world in a relaxed way. (Language) fun is paramount during the hour. We help you with introductory training, individual support and a wide choice of books and language games. We take your preferences into account, such as the days on which you can read and the cycling distance. All we expect from you is that you are available for six months, because we want the child to feel that it is worth it. “When I lock my bike, he enthusiastically calls my name. First he tells stories about school and football. Then we will read and play games. He is really making progress.”

The Home-Start project is there for families who could use some extra support. Experienced and trained volunteers offer parenting and family support for everyday, minor parenting issues. The families themselves indicate where they want support: their question is central. The goal is to increase the self-confidence of parents and strengthen their social relationships. A volunteer says about this: "It is not so much that people raise children incorrectly and therefore need help. The problem is often that they do it alone and do not know exactly how to do it. Then it is useful to be able to chat to someone and tell your story. If you can get rid of tensions a little, then there is room to think again. And to do the raising the child the way you want to do it yourself, and not the way you think it should be done". Volunteers are well prepared for volunteer work by following a basic training of 5 half days, participating in intervision meetings that are regularly planned and guidance from a coordinator. Participation in the training and the meetings also makes the connection with Home-Start and the other volunteers stronger, which adds extra depth to the volunteer work. We are looking for volunteers in Groningen City and the surrounding area who want to connect with Home-Start and thus contribute to the development of a family. Are you that experienced educator, do you have an affinity with children and can you offer a listening ear? Please contact us for more information. Call: Lewenborg, family with 4 daughters aged 7, 5, 4 and a half. The 3 oldest girls have a lot of energy, the parents lack the time and energy to undertake activities with them regularly. Language development is a point of attention. Parents are looking for a volunteer who can occasionally do something fun with (one of the) oldest children: reading, games, playing outside. So that the children get 1-on-1 attention and the parents are relieved for a while. In addition, it is nice if a volunteer wants to think along with a pleasant weekly schedule, aimed at peace and regularity for all family members.

Reading and talking to children

Weekly · 1 to 2 hours
Humanitas Groningen Stad

Do you like reading aloud and other cultures? Then make an hour free every week to read aloud to a child at home and/or read together. But also to play games and especially to talk to the children. You do this at a family's home. It concerns children aged 3 to 12 years old, who have difficulty with reading/language and whose parents cannot help enough. As reading aloud volunteers, you read aloud or read together, you talk to the child and you follow his/her interests. You also play (language) games. The main thing is that it is a pleasant hour together. You come to the family's home and one of the parents is present. We take into account your preferences for day, time and cycling distance. We match carefully and go along to an introductory meeting. You help a child with language development and thus increase his/her chances. We help you with tips, an introductory training, support and a well-stocked library and games cupboard. For people who love language and reading and want to help children to participate in society. You are available for a longer period of time, we really think it is important that the children and you build a bond with each other. You are supported by a volunteer reading coordinator who also knows the family, and we organize an introductory reading meeting and various theme meetings throughout the year where you also meet other reading volunteers.

Buddy Project for Young Carers

Weekly · 1 to 3 hours
Humanitas Groningen Stad

As a volunteer buddy, you come by once a week or once every two weeks to do fun activities with the child/young person. This can be at the child/young person's home or outside the home. For example, going to the cinema together, playing a game, making music together, cycling or swimming together. As a buddy, you give exclusive attention to the child/young person. What we ask: - You are patient - You are kind to children - You offer a listening ear - You are reliable - You are enterprising - You are available for a year What we offer: - Fun and useful volunteer work - Support and guidance by a (volunteer) coordinator - Training - Return and theme meetings - Insurance against damage and accidents. Description of activity Humanitas Young Carers (JMZ) supports children and young people (aged 8 to 24) who care for a family member who is chronically ill, disabled, addicted, confused or depressed. As a result, these young people often have tasks and concerns that are not appropriate for their age. The volunteers of JMZ offer young carers support through buddy contact and fun activities. The buddy contact helps the young carers to share their concerns. The activities offer them the opportunity to be a child again. At the same time, they meet other young carers in this way. The feeling of 'I'm not the only one' can be a great support for them.
