Flooding Limburg

Volunteer fire brigade | Flooding Sven, a volunteer at the South Limburg fire brigade, experienced the flooding up close. This story was created in collaboration with our partners de Volksbank and BLG Wonen. “When the weather forecasts came in, I was asked to clear my agenda to be available to the fire brigade. I stood ready with a charged pager. I stood ready with a charged pager. But what we found in Valkenburg; even the most experienced colleagues had not taken this into account. But what we found in Valkenburg; even the most experienced colleagues hadn't taken this into account. The floods of 1995 and 1997 dwarfed this chaos. At the voluntary fire brigade, our main task is to save people and animals. Such was the case during this natural disaster. On our way to a meadow to save cows from drowning, we crossed a bridge with our fire engine. The river churned and just after our crossing the raging waters swept the bridge with it. The fear was good. Fortunately we were just in time to get the cows to safety. How high the water had risen was revealed later that night during the evacuation of residents. Even the headlights of our tanker sprayer, at a height of 1 meter 20, were under water. the togetherness and help came from all corners Despite all the misery and damage caused by the water disaster, the solidarity showed and help came from all corners. As a fire brigade, we would not have saved this on our own. Great respect and thanks to all citizens who lent a helping hand and braved the risks of rescuing others in need."
